An important movement took place in the history of medieval India. All the preachers of this movement emphasized the importance of Bhakti for attaining liberation. For this reason this movement came to be known as Bhakti movement.
- Evils of Hinduism — In ancient times, Hinduism had touched the pinnacle of progress because of its simplicity. But due to the complications that arose in this religion in the medieval period, its downfall started. Forgetting the worship of one God, people started worshiping many gods and goddesses. Apart from this, he also started worshiping stones, trees, snakes, rivers etc. Many superstitions were prevailing among the people. They started believing in useless rituals and witchcraft. Instead of guiding the people in the right direction, the Brahmins themselves had gone astray. Their aim was to exploit the people in the name of religion on some pretext or the other. The leaders of the Bhakti movement showed a new light to the people by removing the superstitions prevalent in Hinduism.
- Disbelief in Idol Worship -The preachers of the Bhakti movement preached against idol worship. Devotee Kabir ji has said in a couplet that if God can be found by worshiping a stone, then he will worship a mountain. Guru Nanak Dev Ji said that nothing can be achieved by worshiping idols. When these idols are thrown into water, they sink. Those idols which cannot protect themselves, how can they take a man across the ocean?
