Swami Mahavir is considered to be the real founder of Jainism. He was the twenty-fourth Tirthankara (teacher) of Jainism. There were 23 other Tirthankaras before him. The name of the first Tirthankara was Rishabhdev and the name of the 23rd Tirthankara was Parshvanath.Swami Mahavir’s sannyas system or Jainism was initially named ‘Nirgrath’. The literal meaning of Nigranth was freedom from bondage. Jainism taught people the lesson of non-violence and mutual brotherhood. In fact, the contribution of Jainism to Indian culture 223 is unique.
